A New Approach to Goals
Category: what I learned this week

This year I, Karen Hobson have decided to take a new approach to life. No resolutions that always fail when written. This was a new decade and a new year it screamed out for new and different methods. My strategy was...I needed an accountability partner.
That's it, just what I needed someone to keep me on track, someone to answer to, not make my "Oh I got too busy, life got in the way" excuses. NO sire, not this year! Everyone who's ever dieted knows it's all about the weigh-in. Even if you're bad all week, month, the time before the weigh-in you crack down and diet. Gees it's just too embarrassing to go and not lose at least a pound.
In my simple mind I figured if it worked for dieting it would work for goal reaching. As luck would have it the very first week of the New Year I net with someone who loved the idea and agreed to be my accountability partner. I bartered my skills in writing for their coaching skills. The plan was set.
In one weeks time we'd meet. I'd present my goals. We'd discuss them and then I'd set about reaching them. Twice a month we'd meet to go over progress, marking off items as they where completed. Our end date set at April 15th. I was good to go. Of course I left my goal list to the last minute before our meeting. Just like a good diet, as long as I showed up with written plans my accountability concept was working.
It was a good strong list. I hit on all the goals I want to accomplish in the first quarter. This was great, one of my better ideas an accountability partner. I'd finally finish my book. I'd start the webinars I'd been planning. I'd de-clutter my office (clean up once and for all). I write and submit articles, I'd blog a minimum of once a week and I'd build my friends on social networking sites. I was psyched to hand the list off...I'm ready; I'm good to go forth and accomplish.
Why I was even a few minutes early to the meeting with my new accountability partner. Wait, what? Oh no, what do you think it means when your new accountability partner fails to show up for the meeting? The good news...I'd formulated a few solid goals for myself. And now I was back to motivating myself, so much for the new plan...back to the old, "if it is to be it was up to me."
Ok, I'm happy to report...it was just a communication error. My accountability partner thought we were working together on the phone, and I thought we were meeting at Starbucks. Hey, it could happen to anyone...after all Karen Hobson did not put on her list better communication skills, maybe it was an oversite. There's always second quarter!
