Hey, What Are You Known For?

Do people you meet say, "Oh yes, I know about your blog/book, you're known for writing about_____." I've heard you wrote the best article on_____." "Word on the street is you are an expert on______." "Your writing style is very strong, I love authors who use that style." So what are you know for?
Let's pretend...say you write about widget's and you want to grow your readership base. Increasing the number of readers who follow your book, blog, articles is every writers dream. I'm, Karen Hobson the director of Start 2 Finish Writers Workshop and I'm no different than other authors. I want to build my readership, I want to be known for what I do best. The question we must ask ourselves is how can I grow my readership?
A good starting place is to ask yourself this question..."What am I known for?" Say you write about widgets. What are your widgets? What do your widgets do best? What service do your widgets provide? I'm an expert at ______ widgets.
A wonderful example of a business, and make no mistake writing is a business, is the restaurant business. Most restaurants are known for one thing they do well.
McDonalds- Fast Burgers Cheap (in less you're in Paris)
IHOP- Pancakes
Tony Romas- Ribs
In and Out- Double Double
Starbucks- Coffee
The restaurant names are synonymous with the key product they produce. They all do more than one product, but the "one" is what they're known for.
Ever heard of Jeffrey Gitomer? He's an author that's know for his Little Books. Little Black Book, Little Red Book, Little Yellow Book. He did "one" thing very well and he learned to build a brand accordingly. Check him out, he does lots of other books, sales training. But he's best known for "one" thing.
What would your current readers say you write about? Your number one best blog/book/article. This is your starting place the "brand" you build your marketing message around. Talk to your readers ask them what they tell others you write about. If you find they all say something different...Stop it's time you rethought what you're doing.
It's ok if you write about more than one type of widget, we all do. It's important in building a following, especially in the all important niche world that you brand with just "one". Each marketing message you send out highlight the "one". The person who tries to write about all widgets to all peop[le will fall short of their goal.
Send the message that you are the best, the expert, writer on a single type of widget. All your satisfied readers know you for that "one" widget. Your new readers will search for you as the "one" widget expert. What a pleasant surprise it will be when they discover you do even more.
